His Art Education began as a part of his curriculum while earning a Bachelor’s of Architecture degree from the University of Kentucky.  Today he is retired but still a licensed Architect and has a current carrier as a professional artist

Donnys art education developed through a lot of observation and, self-teaching and workshops with noted artists such as Kim English and Scott Burdick.  Donny mostly attributes his development as an artist to his many years designing and illustrating designs for such companies as Paramount, Nickelodeon, Warner Brothers, NASA, SeaWorld, Crayola and KSL resorts at such locations as Squaw Valley Ski Resort and The Hotel Coronado.

“The expectations demanded from that level of international brands set my design and technical skills bar pretty high, and that drive for quality has definitely transferred over to my fine arts pursuits."

Donny was a founding Board Member of the Kentucky School of Art at Spalding University in Louisville Kentucky and sat on the Executive Committee for two years.  KSA offers Bachelors of Fine Art Degrees. He currently is a member of the Deans Advisory Board at the the University of Kentucky College of Design and a visiting Critic.

Mentors are many but some favorites include artists CW Mundy, Kim English, Scott Burdick, Irby Brown and Masters Ilyia Repin, Joaquin Sorolla, JMW Turner, John Singer Sargent and Degas.

Donny and his wife Debra had a second home in Santa Fe for 11 years and he showed in a number in Santa Fe Galleries during that time. He will be joining Sage Creek Gallery there this fall and is excited about returning to the City Different!

“I love the diversity between New Mexico and Kentucky.  The cultures, the weather and the landscapes are so different.  Each time I return to each location I am re-energized about painting what is there.”

"I love to paint!"

"I love the work of it.  It is a very real physical activity for me and is connected to me through my senses.  I love the feel of the materials in my hands, the smell of the paint, the light in the studio and the tremendous satisfaction from painting outside and from life.  Through this my thinking process becomes part of that physical activity and allows me to be in the moment entirely.  I can’t think of anything else I do that comes close.  “exercising  mentally” while painting produces results for me."
